Seize This Freaking Day

Another day of love

Another day of love

Seize this freaking day.

Or, for those of you who fancy your quotes in Latin, carpe freaking diem.

What does it really mean to seize this day?

Why seize this day?

Today may be another Saturday to you.

Today may be another day before Easter to you.

Today may be another weekend day to finish your taxes, clean out your garage, and run errands.

Today may be another grey March day in a seemingly endless parade of grey March days.

Like you, I’ve lived through thousands of another days.  The thing that keeps me living after nearly dying four years ago last week is doing things each day to grow more love in the world.

I have experienced multiple forms of abuse, neglect, disrespect, and insensitivity from others.  Maybe you have experienced those things as well.  I don’t like how it feels to have experienced all those things, and I don’t like how it feels to remember what it was like to experience all those things.  I really don’t like that remembering what it was like to experience all those things delays my complete recovery.

I made a choice four years ago to do whatever it takes to claim my life.  Others have tried to take it from me.  It’s not theirs to take.

Instead, I give and receive love.

Instead, I transform through love.

To me, today is another day of giving out little bags of hearts to those who have opened their hearts to me. Today is another day of giving out little bags of hearts to those who are making a positive difference in the world.  Today is another day of giving out little bags of hearts to those who are in need of a reminder of how much love there is in the world.  Today is another day of giving out little bags of hearts to those who are grieving.  Today is another day of giving out little bags of hearts to those who dread facing another holiday alone.

To me, today is another day of saying thank you to those few friends who have proven and are still proving their love and commitment to my continuing wellbeing.  To me, today is another day of forgetting what I am still unable to do to simply be there for those who feel forsaken.   To me, today is another day of asking others, “How can I help?”  To me, today is another day of helping.

Who needs to know they are loved?

Who needs to know they are loved?

Grit your teeth if you must.  Kick your fear, your excuses, your self-centeredness, your rational mind to the curb.  Find a small way or find a big way to do this.  Do what it takes to be there for others in the way they need you to show up for them right now.

But seize this freaking day.

“You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world.”
― Woodrow Wilson
