Transforming grieving through love:

With so many people grieving the loss of their loved ones, their lives as they know it, their jobs, and their health, I’ve begun doing a little something I hope you’ll consider making part of your life.

I go to the dollar store to buy little blank books to give to friends or strangers who are grieving. These books can easily fit into a pocket or a purse and are sealed in plastic wrappers. They have metallic covers and look much prettier than one might think a dollar book will look.

When I meet someone who is grieving, I offer them a book. I then invite him or her to open the book to write down the good things that are happening to them. Seeing proof that good things are still happening for them can feel wonderful when they find themselves in one of the dark days that can go with the grieving process.

Why do I like doing this?

  • I like doing this because seeing the book is proof that a stranger cared.  There are days when the knowledge that someone cared when we were at our lowest is the only thing that can get us to tomorrow.
  • I like doing this because it helps me heal the memories of when the people who’d promised to be there for me during my dark days couldn’t get away fast enough.
  • And I like doing this to invite each recipient to stay focused on how they can use the experience of their grief to somehow make a positive difference in the world.

How are you making a positive difference in the world? The more we share our ideas, the more we can inspire each other and the more good we can do.
